OVFB Newsletter: March 2011
The end of February has arrived all too soon. I hope you have been to handle the crazy weather we’ve been having lately.
Anyhow, there have been many things going on at the Ontario Vegetarian Food Bank. First of all, our Income Tax Clinic is currently underway, and we’ve been quite busy. We’re hosting this free income tax clinic with our partner agency, Universal Community Help, at their office in North York and at the Ontario Vegetarian Food Bank. If you would like more information please call the OVFB helpline number at: 416-744-HELP (4357).
Back on February 13th, the Executive Director of the OVFB, Malan Joseph, and I went to the Shri Maha Kali Amma Temple in Brampton where we picked up a huge food and clothing donation from the Temple members. I had paid this temple a visit back in November 2010 and was given the opportunity to speak to the congregation about the OVFB. The members then started collecting food and clothing donations in December. It was quite a sight when we went to pick them up--there were so many items there was barely enough room in the car for us! We are very happy to be community partners with the Shri Maha Kali Amma Temple, and we are thankful to the congregation and to the Head Priest Pujari Dudnaught Singh for all of their support.
Also, last week at the OVFB our volunteers from the Tzu Chi Foundation came with their group of volunteers for the day. They decided to come earlier this month, because last weekend was Family Day—and we had lots of families that came to the OVFB.
We have also been conducting out Food Handling Certificate Course over the last few months. So far we have had 25 graduates and 20 of them have since gotten jobs! Some are working part-time in cafés, and one is working in a bakery. This is wonderful news for us, and we’re glad to see that people are getting jobs so quickly after taking the course with us.
Before I forget—remember Loving Hut, the restaurant that donated a fantastic New Year’s Eve lunch to us? Well, in the Metro newspaper, Loving Hut was given a 3 out of 5 star rating in their food column Lunch Rush. Way to go and keep up the great work!
Spring is in the air so, until next time, get out your raincoats, boots and allergy pills!
